As for uploading pics, I use the official iPhone app and for chat I use beejive as it has all my im accounts in 1 place, never use website for facecook chat.
Website in Safari is fine, and I also use Beejive, but it would be nice to have an official native app for notifications.
Friendly was a pretty good 3rd party alternative, but has become incredibly buggy over time. Hopefully they'll fix it soon.

The website in safari is awesome, but it lacks one huge feature...the chat feature! Unless I am missing something, it's not there.
You're not imagining anything--not available through Safari on the iPad.
Try iCab Mobile web browser. It costs $1.99 but is such a more versatile and robust alternative to Safari. Among the benefits are the ability to set how the browser appears to websites, the Browser ID I believe (Safari 5, Firefox, IE, etc) so that you don't automatically get stripped down versions that they may serve up for iPads. I've set my Browser ID to Safari 5 and now when browsing Facebook, you get the full site, including the ability to use chat.
There are a couple of Facebook apps that are ok myPad is probably the best. But I've really got used to using Facebook on flipboard. I love the interface
People have been misunderstanding this quote since Zuckerburg said it. The event which that quote was spoken was at an event for mobile phones. Not tablets/iPads. When he said, "Its not mobile" he meant that its not a mobile phone so it is irrelevant to today's event.
I have to constantly refresh the Facebook home page in Safari to get it to work correctly.
Except Friendly hasn't been working the past few days since Facebook changed their APIs.
Yeah. I am waiting (im)patiently for Apple to push through their latest update. They say it's been hung up in Apple's review process since Saturday.
I tried out Friended, which works. Not bad - small text and wasted screenspace, but functional which is better than not...
