FaceTime audio on Apple watch over wifi network ?

Has anyone found out out if the Apple Watch can perform facetime audio calls over a WiFi network? If that is true, then the watch can (in a sense) function as a standalone smart watch. Since David Pogue said that the watch can do a few functions over a WiFi network, that opens up the possibility of making facetime calls over WiFi. So, any thoughts?

Word so far is that it can't even do FaceTime audio while tethered to the phone. I'm hoping such word is wrong, but... stranger things have happened.

Even if it isn't, wouldn't it just take a software update? If no, we always have our phone..
