Facetime compatibility detection: How?

As we've learnt, the iPhone 4 / iOS 4 will detect compatibility during a voice call.

At this point, there is no point-to-point IP between the two handsets.

Anyone know how the phones communicate to detect compatibility? I'm assuming there's some kind of data-side-channel support in 3G GSM (and maybe lesser protocols.) that is being used.
