FaceTime HD compatibility with external camera

I am almost ready to buy the new iMac, but I was wondering about something.

Apple lists the new iMac of being able to send hd FaceTime video, but it does nor say either way if I am forced to use the internal camera to output hd, or if I can use an external camera instead and still send hd. Has anyone tried hd FaceTime with an external camera on the newest iMac?

Of course, I am aware external cameras work with FaceTime in sd mode on other computers, such as my old MacBook 2,1.
