FaceTime not working - what's wrong?

I tried to make a video call through FaceTime via my MacBook Pro. After putting in the person's number, I clicked video. But nothing happened at all. I closed and re-opened the app multiple times but kept getting nowhere with it.

It was my first try using the program. What was I doing wrong?
