facetime on 4.1, ok to use email only?

I haven't upgrade to 4.1 yet. 4.1 has this email based facetime feature. I wonder if it can be activated by using email other than phone number, and other user may use my email to make facetime call to me?
Or it's not possible, or possible on both phone number and email?
