You can do it now if you went another route with your i4... but I know most people won't.

Not this year,

That's because not everyone with an iPhone 4 is jailbroken and using FaceTime over a 3G connection. Imagine if every single user does that.

It uses a relatively small amount of data (3MB per minute).

That's tiny relative to other uses of data (and similar to streaming video like YouTube).

Need more HSPA+ upgrades to towers as well as fiber backhaul for increased data rates and lower latency. Also this would be near impossible to do over any type of GSM connection and seeing as AT&T doesn't have 3G in allot of areas I would imagine their would be allot areas covered in EDGE only that wouldn't be too happy...

Am using it over 3G right now and it seems quite usable. Certainly not unusable...

Yes, when a limited number of people are jailbreaking to do it. Allow everyone to do it right now and all the progress ATT has made with it's network in the last year goes out the window.

I have my iPhone Jailbroken and must use the FaceTime feature over 3G networks because I can't connect to Wi-Fi on campus, and it is VERY usable. I have the unlimited data plan, so overages are a non-issue. I've conferences with my friend while he was on Wi-Fi and the video and audio was really really smooth.

I have also conferences with my mom who is back home (and she's also using the 3G connection) and the video and audio are great too. I've actually called her while she was driving home and that's when there was lag on her end because of the fact that she's moving and is probably jumping around to weak signals and different towers.

But FaceTime is definitely usable over 3G.

it'll come to 3g as soon as AT&T finds another way to soak its customers for a few more dollars.

And I'm guessing you can't FaceTime with say an iMac right? I've head the 4.1 is bringing email links to facilitate... An iMac would be great for that....any word?

Exactly. It would be like if everyone in my school decided to watch YouTube at the same time over 3G but worse. So much wasted bandwidth....:eek::eek: .
