What makes the small video icon appear on the Facetime button in the Contacts app on iPads and iPhones using IOS6.01?

Its not having a camera (I've tried iPhone 5, iPad 3 & 4 and iPad mini), nor is it having a Facetime account (got one), nor an iCloud account (got one), nor having Facetime signed in and switched on (it is), so what is it?

Even contacts without the video icon still work with Facetime video, and there seems no logic behind when the icon appears and for which contacts.

Contacts with no icon next to the Facetime button still have the icon next to a contact method in the list when the Facetime button is clicked, so why not on the Facetime button?!

Someone must know the answer

I think it has something to do with the fact that contacts has no idea you are contacting someone with either an iPhone or Mac with Facetime capabilities until you actually call them.

Once you do, the icon shows up next to that number or email address.

I think MozMan68 has it right:

From looking at my contacts, the video graphic appears only for those contacts that I've had FaceTime calls with. Other contacts that I know have FaceTime-capable devices do not have the graphic, just the text-only button, as is the case with all other contacts.

So in order for the facetime icon to appear beside the contact, you must at least have 1 facetime conversation with the contact first?

That's how it seems to work, at least based on what I see in my contacts.

In the attachment below, the image on the left is for a contact that I've never had a FaceTime conversation with but that I know has a FaceTime-capable device. The one on the right is from a contact that I've FaceTime'd with previously.
