facetime working badly

every now and then it shuts down, sometimes it fails to detect the cam when it starts... is this common? I'm totally annoyed, I've been suffering this a lot and I've decided to use Skype. It's a late 2013 MacBook Pro running 10.11.5, but it has been always like this really

I have FaceTime under EL Captain and it works like a charm (never had a problem).
