I would like to do a factory reset on my iPhone but I would like to know if I need to turn off find my iPhone before doing a factory reset or is it not needed?

No and yes. Up to you. If you gonna use same apple id the no prob to leave find my iphone on. But if you want to setup new apple id then need to turn off.

So which is it :). It’s just a reset not going to sell the iPhone X.

If you plan to sell the phone/use another Apple ID > Yes. If you just do a factory reset to start afresh/restore the backup with the same Apple ID > as you like, no specific need to turn it off.

If you have find my iPhone turned on and you go into Settings > General > Reset and you Erase all Content and Settings, it will prompt you to enter your Apple ID password, by entering this password, you disable the find my iPhone feature. It is required when you factory reset.
