Hello,

I am wondering if anyone is knowledgeable about factory unlocked iPhones, that is, phones sold directly by Apple (either online or at the retail store) that are not locked to a carrier. I am wanting to have more information about two cases in particular:

In Canada:
The iPhone 3GS 8GB that was just released after the announcement of the iPhone 4 is allegedly unlocked within Canada, but cannot be used in other countries. I read on Wikipedia that it is indeed possible to lock phones to a specific country. Is this the case for the "commitment free" iPhones that are sold in Canada (as well as the coming iPhone 4s)? I called the retail line as well and they are giving BS answers, so it sounds like someone is trying to hide something...

In Europe:
I know that in some countries, phones must be sold unlocked, or are able to be unlocked. Is this only a network unlock and it is still locked to the country afterwards, or a true unlock where you can use it with any SIM card in the world?

Basically, I am wanting to know if I want a true factory unlocked iPhone that will work anywhere I am travelling, where would I have to purchase it?

Thanks!
