Failed restoring backup...help please

So on a whim I tried to download and install el captain. Well that was a huge mistake. It failed and crashed my computer.

I have a back up from about a year ago that I tried to roll back to and it failed. So I tried to do a fresh instal of Maverick that came with my computer. That worked great but I really don't want to start over me lose everything if I can avoid it.

So once I have an operating system, I tried to restore a backup. Once it gets close to being done, it says it has failed and try again.

I'm trying another backup.

Anyone have any ideas?

I don't want to lose everything
