I left an iMac in work updating a couple of hours ago (left on a screen saying "50 minutes until complete"), come back to to find that it's still on 10.5.8. It had rebooted and seems to be working fine. What could have happened?

I suggest you do a backup, wipe clean your hard drive, repartition the hard drive, and do a clean installation of your upgrade.

10.5.8 is not Snow Leopard. You cannot just download and install the Snow Leopard upgrade. You must buy the DVD at the store. It's only $29, so hop in your car or go online and purchase a copy.

He didn't say he download...

okay, what message comes before that? Ah Never mind. Are you upgrading from a snow Leopard DVD? If you are, the messages wouldn't be logged, unless it saved.

I was using a Snow Leopard DVD.

Well in that case, I wouldn't not know what cause it failed. Try doing again but this time, make a backup if you haven't done so, boot from your leopard DVD and wipe out your hard drive as it said before, and do a clean installation.

Thanks, I'd used an externel HD to make a time machine backup already, but I'd rather not wipe and reinstall. I'd lose half a day putting all my applications back on and I've not got the time.

Ah, sorry, sounded like you were talking about Software Update. My bad.

Yeah, I'd suggest a wipe and reinstall. Obviously, a backup would be necessary first.

I don't see anything relevant in the Console messages, those look like from when you shut down before booting to the SL DVD (did you boot from the disk or just run the installer directly?). You might try booting from the disk and running it that way if you didn't before.

No probs :) Yeah, ran from inside finder. I'll try booting from it tomorrow and see how that goes. Thanks for the replies.

Probably had trouble shutting down some of your open programs, so it hung without completing the install. Glad to hear it's working now.
