Hi all,

Our new external hard drive (1TB Maxtor) has been giving io read write errors lately, and now will not mount at all.

Edit: I can't even reformat it, is it gone?

When connecting to any of my Macs it says Mac OS X cannot recognize the drive, please initialize it etc. It will not appear in the Finder at all.

So my idea:

  • Take the drive out and put it in my G5 (or G4 if it's not SATA).
Would IO errors come from a bad drive, or from a bad controller?

This would void my warranty obviously.

Any terminal tricks?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
