The backup plan in case of our setup is marked by two dimensions of redundancy: used backup solution and type of backup destination. These are CCC / Time Machine on one side and USB external ssd(hdd) / sparsebundle on NAS volume formatted to EXT4 on another one.
Before upgrading to current MacOS version all types of backups produced so far had to move to single but special usb external drive (as logical and physical infrastructure used in backups production process is too costly, marked furthermore by big reserve of storage space; also as after upgrade to current OS X backups generated so far can be used only passively - no maintainance, furthermore as backups are marked by highly valuable backup depth/history).
So before upgrading to Sierra the task was to archive all types of backups (inclusively Recovery HD clone) to one single usb external. Backup of each type gets dedicated partition on that drive. Strategy was to use only Disk Utility for partitioning (to avoid inter-interferences between two different partitioning tools) and operating system the sought file system on given partition is supported natively by.
Of course all that on GPIU disk.
With Disk Utility it was possible to create one partition for HFS+ followed by Recovery HD Clone partition (latter however made using Copy Carbon Cloner) followed by one yet partition for HFS+. Following them one partition for EXT4 come into partition layout. This was still possible (formatting under Linux). It was however not possible to create with DU one more partition EXT4 - creation failed every time. Windows computer needed to be taken to accomplish this task. Attempts failed either under os x 10.9 as well as past the upgrade to 10.12. As soon as 2nd partition for EXT4 created using Windows everything else works fine (formatting, populating with user data). The only unpartitioned-gap in disk layout seems to be required by HD Recovery clone.
Question reg. encountered problems: is this an issue in my understanding of matters or rather DU problem?
