I’ve been out of the loop for a bit. Has there always been so many ads for games that are not even close to how it plays vs the advertising of the game?

It has been that way for quite some time. Another similar tactic is ads saying there's a new version of the game and that you should update, but it's really just a similar game from another developer/company.

Honestly, ads are just getting horrible everywhere. Even on YouTube, there are some pretty wild ones...put spoons over your eyes and tap them with another spoon to improve your eyesight? Yeah, right.

Aren’t there laws against bait and switch?

Yes, but I don't think this is bait and switch, especially considering the games are usually free. The ads are simply misleading and deceptive.

Bait and switch is when something is advertised for a low price to get people interested, but then they are pressured to buy a similar and more expensive product (usually by saying the "bait" is out of stock).
