I have a late 2012 27" iMac (iMac 14.2, I believe).
I intend to open it up and place two SSDs inside, as others have done before me. This is done by using both the hard drive connector on front side of iMac (inside the iMac, I should say) and the blade connector located on the rear side of the iMac.
My concern is about the thermal regulator connector that I understand Apple does (or did) have on their hard drive. If this is disconnected, rumor has it that the fan will become possessed and spin at its highest speed from the moment the computer is turned on.
To solve this problem, some have used software designed to circumvent the Apple fan controller. But I wonder what happens if you boot into Windows (anyone tried Boot Camp an iMac using this type of setup)?
Anyway, I would love some more information about this fan controller issue.
If I opened my iMac and only replaced the current 1TB HDD with an SSD (simply swapping the drive, same connections) would this produce the infamous fan problem?
Also has anyone else here added a secondary SSD using the SATA port on the back of the motherboard, and did you have any fan issues after doing so?
Any information about your experiences in replacing drive on the 27" iMac (late 2012), would be helpful; specifically as regards the fan controller concerns mentioned above.
