fan is coming on with no apps, and other weird things

hi
i have a black macbook.
and the fans are constantly on.
ive quit all apps, shut down, rebooted, still on.
i have over 100gb free drive space, 4gb ram 2.4processor.
i dont know whats causing this....

does this sound like this mac is dieing?

sometimes the screen just goes blank, and permanently goes in sleep mode, have to power off with finger on button. not daily, but has happened regularly.

also random files from my desktop got trashed recently, into trash bin.
very very very concerning, i found no answers on net apart from keep a tidy desktop.
but where does it say in manual that having a messy desktop results in files getting trashed?? folders vanished... not happy.

ive backed up my data today, i expect the worst.

any advice?

Good idea to backup

Great idea to backup. I would go get your Mac serviced at an Apple Store. Bring it in to get it checked with the screen and standby problem. With the fan problem, you could download SMC Fan Control and see what the current temperature and speed of your CPU fan is. From there you could set speeds (unless the temperature is too high)

yeah the fan is constantly on now...even in screen sleep mode.

what should i do before taking the macbook to apple?

they will first say "update OSX"

I dont want to update OSX.
im using 10.5.4
all my apps work.
If i update OSX, im gonna have so many problems and issues, its not worth the bother.

hypothetically speaking, what if someone has cracked apps installed, and takes his mac to apple store and they see the pirated apps.

Could i or should i make a new user account with limited access and let them play with that? Plus i dont trust anyone with personal data...

any steps i should take before taking mac to apple?

i mean ive super duper cloned it already.
im just gonna buy a new external drive and time machine it too very soon.
shall i then just reformat and re-install OSX?

actaully i have my old internal mac drive, i can just refit that in...
i was planning to use an external drive to update OSX and test out how things work....kinda like a sandbox testing drive...

this is gonna be complicated.

Sorry for the late reply. I was sucked into other things and didnt get onto MacRumors recently. But yes you will have a hard time with the Apple store. I dont think making a seperate account will do much. I thing they will just run diagnosic tests and maybe replace the fan inside or maybe even replace the motherboard/logicboard. But overall good luck with the Apple techs!!!

the fan does not come on anymore.

its weird.
it was constantly on for a few days.
and now it seems ok.

ill postpone my apple visit, see how this goes, and gonna update and test on an external drive, with updating osx and maybe even up to snow leopard.
