somewhere
im sitting here typing a paper for class and I have started to notice a constant fan noise even though the temp of my cpu is at 31C. According to istat both fans are spinning between 1900-2000rpm .. anyone else notice this?

i have a 15in 2.3 quad

Its most likely the hard drive.

Is the noise coming from the right of the trackpad?

Check the "System Profiler".
Click on "Serial-ATA".
In my experience the Hitachi drives are particularly noisy and sound like fans.

the drive is a toshiba 750gb
the sound is coming from the right side but it does not sound like
a hard drive, more like a light fan noise.

I'll be replacing the HDD in my mid-2010 15" MBP (that also has this noise) this week with an SSD.

I'll let you know if it makes a difference.

thanks

I will eventually do the same but put the 750gb in my drive bay since i never use the optical

Depending on what surrounds it, HD's can totally sound like fans. I had a notebook drive in an enclosure, and it sounded like a fan inside the enclosure, but outside of the enclosure, it sounds totally different. Spinning platters are not entirely dissimilar from spinning fan blades.

I have a similar noise, in my 15 inch mbp, drives me crazy. I currently have the local Apple store replacing the opitcal drive and the fan on the right hand side.

The noise does seem to dissipate if I press down on the area to the right of the trackpad with my palm (i.e where the HDD is located).

That is why I'm convinced its the HDD making the noise.

I have exactly the same issue, and pressing down on the right hand side dissipates the noise noticeably as well. Really hope Apple provides a proper solution, which doesn;t involve everyone going out and buying themselves an ssd.

Unfortunately, the fact that pressing down on the chassis decreases the noise tells me that a sftware/firmware update won't fix the problem.
