i recently got a Mac G5 from a friend who works at an un-named company #1 that uses various types of computers (that belong to the customers) to test product for company #2.

the G5 was phased out and an intel mac took its place. company #2 said it was too expensive to ship the G5 back to their company and they told company #1 to wipe the disks and dispose of it.

..and so it came to me. it has dual 2.0 GHz processors, and an ATI video card with 256 MB of Vram.

Here's the problem: To do the testing somebody hacked the firmware (i think) to make the fans run full speed at all times. it's loud as hell and must cut the life of the fans considerably.

Does anybody know what's going on here, and how could i possibly fix it?

thanks,

The fans on that are quite loud anyway... However, I think a PRAM reset should get the fan settings back to their default levels.

zapped the p-ram and the fans slowed down considerably, though, as you say, it's still a pretty noisy machine.
