I've tried changing the default settings and creating new settings/profiles, but smcFanControl still seems unable to control he fans in my new MacBook Pro. For instance, if I set the active setting to Higher RPM (4000 rpm minimum), they do not speed up and the menu bar stills reads about 2000 rpm. I did have Fan Control installed, but I have uninstalled it correctly and reset the SMC (smcFanControl was installed before Fan Control yet it did not work then). Anyone know what the problem could be?

Hmm.. has it EVER WORKED for you?
Tell us how, you'd reset the SMC? Was it like this??

MacBook, MacBook Pro

  1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
  2. Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
  3. Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
  4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
  5. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

smcFanControl has never worked for me, but Fan Control has. Yes, I reset the SMC using the method in your post and I believe it worked because the fans returned to spinning at 2000 rpm instead of the 2500 rpm set by Fan Control.
