Hey all,

I've had my new late-2008 mbp for a few weeks now and the fans are driving me CRAZY. I upgraded from a mb.

I'm hoping these are running excessively fast and it's not normal - but before I go visit the friendly apple store I figured I ask here.

As an example, right now I'm using firefox, Mail.app is running, but minimized and Adium. A few other small apps, but nothing major.

CPU is 90-95% idle.
All temps are ~85F.
Both fans are 6200 RPM! and show no signs of slowing down.

If anyone has seen this, has a cure, whatever, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks!

Did you restore from a time machine backup? I ask because maybe some 3rd party app is screwing things up for you.

Maybe try making a new account, logging out of yours and logging into that one. See if the fans are still spinning when logged into that one, if they aren't that should tell you that there's some random software causing it I guess.

I can tell you to try resetting the SMC.
  1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
  2. Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
  3. Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
  4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
  5. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

MBP Fans

I dropped my MBP and the fans have not worked since. You could try that.
