Fantom Ext. Hard Drive "Disk Erase Failed" Using Disk Utility

My Fantom 1tb drive came in and I tried installing it using disk utility. I followed the instructions by clicking on the Erase Tab on the harddrive. I selected the MacOS Extended format that they recommended. I click Erase then after a few seconds I get the "Disk Erase Failed. File System Formatter Failed."

Any other options to get it working?

I DID find a solution to the issue of not being able to partition a USB drive. The trick is that on Disk Utility, with partition selected, click on Options; in my case (iMac using Intel) I had to select "GUID Partition Table" for an Intel-based machine; then everything worked fine.
