After five+ years I've given up on it on Mac, its just gotten worse and worse, constantly churning CPU, getting slower and slower with each new release (which appear to be weekly) and requiring frequent restarts of the app to fix the lag.

Can't say I'm a great fan of safari but at least it doesn't hog CPU and the screen lag behind mouse scrolls.

After using Safari since jumping from OS9.2 to Leopard, I've given up on it in favor of Firefox for similar reasons. But then, I haven't upgraded beyond Snow Leopard, so the latest version of Safari that it will run is pretty old.

I have found Safari 6 and up to be quite a competent browser! That being said, it does lack the customization and extension market of Firefox. A good middle ground in my opinion is Google Chrome, but you would need to investigate whether it works well for your needs.
