Is the 18W Fast charger out of the box the best option or is there a better one to upgrade to?

Totally clueless on this subject.

Thanks!

There is a 30 W iPad charger that you can get from Apple. I have one of those along with the 18 W charger that came in the box. I haven’t had enough time to test the difference but I’m guessing it’s not a huge difference.

I'm currently looking at this myself, seems the 30W are a better option but only a little bit as the max power draw seems to be between 22-23W. So that all depends on if its worth it or not to you? I'm not sure for myself at this point but I also have a iPad Pro 2018 that I'm looking to improve as well so I need to find out what the max draw on that is today.

There have been lengthy discussions on this in the past. The difference is negligible in fact the difference between 18W and the Standard iPad charger is the same as well. So stick to the one in the box.

Agree with @akash.nu - the phone chooses the charging profile/charging rate, not the wall wart. The 18W charger is a Power Delivery (PD) charger, and as long as a charger supports PD profiles it doesn’t matter how much capacity the wall charger has, 18W, 30W, 100W, the phone will pick the correct PD profile and control the charging. Larger capacity laptop wall warts may support more powerful PD profiles than 18W, but the phone can’t choose them.

IOW, If the phone only supports a MAXIMUM 18W PD profile, nothing will charge it faster than 18W. And it only charges at 18W to a certain level, somewhere around 60%-ish I believe, then the charging power is reduced (by the phone then choosing a different, lower power profile) as the battery approaches full charge.

If the phone gets confused, it should default to a straight 5W but I’m not sure of that.

Thanks for that @doboy very useful! I had assumed that the phone would use the lower profile from the 29W charger, apparently that is not true. And the 29W isn’t recommended by the testing site.

Yeah, I used to use 29W charger on my iPad Pro, but after reading this I started using my Anker 60W charger that supports 9V/3A charging mainly to reduce the heat generated during charging.
