I'm looking for a external hard drive, 1 or 2tb and quick.

Not sure what to buy? I got a 13" retina, so should I go after a thunderbolt or USB disk?

If you're looking at bus-powered externals, just be sure you pay attention to what's in the box (sometimes the manufacturers go to great lengths to hide the disk's specs).

For example, the LaCie rugged bus-powered Thunderbolt drive is pretty nice in a lot of ways, but inside is a 5400 rpm drive. Great, fast interface . . . slow old drive.

G-drive has a Thunderbolt bus-powered 1 tb external with a 7200 rpm drive. That's not bad.

Probably you'll get more advice if you're more specific about your needs. For example, if you're OK with a drive that needs AC power, your choices expand hugely.

USB 3.0 is fine. There are no hard disks that are faster than USB so you might as well save your money and skip Thunderbolt.
