My MBP (with TouchBar) has a work user and a home user, and I've always used Touch ID for fast user switching, with one finger for work and one finger for home. I've upgraded from Catalina to Ventura and now it doesn't work the way it used to.

When I press the Touch ID button with any finger, it just locks the Mac, and I have to use the correct finger to log back into the same user account I was already logged in as.

To switch, I now have to touch the button with the correct finger, wait at least two seconds, then press it.

This is really annoying and I get it wrong almost every time. Can I get the old way back? According to the help it would work the 'correct' way if I didn't have a TouchBar, which is pretty galling.

After a bit more time with this, I’ve figured out the Apple help is wrong and you don’t have to wait for the TouchID message to appear on the TouchBar before pressing. You can do a brief touch then a press. It quicker than 2 seconds, but slower than just pushing the button straight away.

I guess I can live with it, but if anyone finds an option to disable the press-to-lock action on the TouchID button it would be great to hear about it.
