faster shipping to the verizon store?

I regretfully did not preorder my iphone, and went to verizon to see if they somehow had a black 16gb in stock. They didn't. The salesman said no one in the area has them, and that they were randomly getting in around 4-5 phones at a time of various colors/sizes to sell to walk-ins. I told him I would just have to order from home and bear the oct 19th ship date, and he said that if ordered through that store to be shipped there, I might get the phone a few days earlier than the 19th and pick it up the day it arrives to them. Is this true? I kind of wanted the convenience of ordering from home and now I'm not so sure it'll get there any earlier than it would to my house. Has anyone done this before?
