When I click on a .jpg file that someone has sent, it puts the file in my downloads folder.

I hate having to minimize my browser, then click on the Macintosh HD, then click on download and then double click on the jpg file.

Is there a way to only click it once and it opens immediately so I can few the jpg file?

I want to cut down on the steps.

Thanks everyone

What about QuickLook (little button) or selecting Open Attachment?

We are talking about Mail though, don't we?

No. Just on a web page. In gmail, it just shows it. But when I am on a web page that says click here for a jpg or even a pdf. It always puts it in my download folder.

Can you open pdf files without having to go through all of the above steps?

Thanks again.

Okay then, which browser are you using?
Safari opens JPGs and PDFs inside Safari for me, have you tried "Open in new tab" yet?

Firefox. When I right click to open in new tab, it puts it in my downloads folder.

It does work like you say in Safari! Much faster. Maybe I will switch to Safari.

[Bold above added] Lots of good advice so far. You also don't need to minimize the browser. You can open the downloads folder in front of the browser. The just Alt-Tab (actually CMD-TAB - oops) back and forth as needed.

Or ... you can turn on Spaces (found in Preferences) so that you can switch to a different space and look at the open downloads folder there (and you can leave the folder open while you are browsing. Use Hot Corners to quickly switch back and forth).

It's CMD+TAB, Alt+Tab is for Windows and behaves a little bit differently, though one can use Witch to enable Option/Alt+Tab in Mac OS X to switch between windows.
