Fastest method to transfer data from old MBP?

I'm shortly going to need to transfer my data from an early 2009 MBP (Ethernet, FW800 and USB2) to a new MBP (USB3, TB)
Am I right in thinking the best method would be to get hold of a Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor?

Oh yes, I also have a Time Machine backup on a USB3 drive. Would that be faster?

Just use the TM backup, why spend extra $$$, the time taken/saved won't be massive.

USB 3 is way faster than firewire, remember the slowest port speed dictates the speed of the transfer. Thunderbolt 2 may be 4 times as fast as USB 3 but the firewire will limit it to over ten times slower.
