If you have a rMBP, then why not a thunderbolt based solution?

I'm pulling in 400 mb/s on a drobo mini and while not cheap the speed is very fast.

can't afford it, looking for something for under 80$ preferably. So pretty much whats the fastest usb 3.0 external drive I can find for under 80$ ?

For $80 the one you linked to looks good, because for that price your limited to budget consumer drives anyways. If you can spend a little more you could get a desktop drive http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digit...=UTF8&qid=1376181195&sr=8-1&keywords=wd+black and a USB enclosure for around $25. The desktop drives are a little faster with larger caches. USB 3 will run hard drives at near full speed, so you shouldn't see noticeable lag
