fastest way to upload video footage from an HDMI DVD

I want the fastest way to upload video footage from an HDMI DVD recorder to a Macbook 2007 external hard drive - eSATA is best I believe. The mini DVI is output only I believe so that leaves USB which may be adequate. I have searched forums to no avail, but I am sure there must be others who want to do( and have done) this.
