FCE 3.0 to 4.0 update question?

Have just updated FCE from 3.0 to 4.0.... I was expecting to enter my old serial number at some point!! but this wasn't the case? it was a clean install and was wondering why anyone would buy the full version if the cheaper update is only required!!!!????
