FCE 3.5 Live action Capture problem

I am trying to set up our school studio so we can capture live telecast from 2 DV camcorders through a Laird Digital Switcher to an Intel iMac. the set up works fine with iMovie 06 but using "capture now" in FCE gets nothing but a blank preview screen with the VTR needs to be turned on message. I'd like to be able to train the students on FCE, but won't be able to if I don't find out how to make it work. I'm working with high school students and have only been working with video for about 7-8 years. Any help will be appreciated.

I think you need to set your device control to "non-controllable device." Open your capture window, go to the capture settings window and you'll see the drop down menu.
