FCE inconsistent audio sync w/ analog xfer

I'm transferring old analog VHS and 8mm camcorder tapes to DV, and then to Final Cut Express 4. When the clips get into FCE, some audio clips, from the same tape, are a second or two out of sync.

I've tried new timelines at 48bit audio and 32 bit audio and the results are inconsistent. Is this a typical problem with FCE or am I doing something wrong?
