FCE4 - Cannot change transition length

I am having a problem with creating transitions. Usually the transition works fine but then occasionally I add a transition which comes up too short. I go into the transition viewer but cannot make any adjustments. It will not allow me to lengthen it. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the particular transition because it will work fine elsewhere. I have had it happen with different transitions as well.

The same thing is happening with the audio transition. The one I am currently working on is giving a total transition time of 00:00:00;01 for both the video and audio transition.

Any insight greatly appreciated.

the clip doesn't have any handles... you need to shorten the clip so that there is media to use for the transition.

I never thought of that. My one clip was at its end so I shortened it and now it works.
