now with the FCLGA2011-3 version of the socket out, will Intel still update the -2 version of the chips ? Just wondering if there is an upgrade path for the current NMP.

Short Answer = NO

Now that they have the Haswell(2011-3) variants out there will be no more Ivybridge/Sandybridge based variants launching.

It just doesn't make commercial sense for Intel to continue developing older architecture. If people need to upgrade then they will end up buying a newer system that has a 2011-3 CPU installed inside and Intel make the CPU AND the Chipset Sale. Where's the sense for Intel in that.

I am sure that there would be a market if they did. If they continued to develop the 1366 Westmere Processors for instance then am sure there would be numbers of people with the 2009/2010 Mac Pro's that would lap them up, even if the HP and other non-MAC workstation users didn't.
