FCP - problem with footage

I've got a MP4 file which I want to take into FCP to export as smaller chunks, but FCP wont let me view it in the viewer or timeline.

When I try I get "general error", and the canvas goes red with "Display unavailable".

Any idea why?

The file is 9.17 GB. Format is MP4 Movie, 1920 × 1080. Codec: AAC, H.264, MPEG-4 SDSM, MPEG-4 ODSM

Also, because this file is so large (it's a hour long movie), compressor doesnt seem to be able to handle it. Hence I need to break it up using FCP...

Or is there other software I could use to split it?

MPEG streamclip is free and should do it
