I was editing video and stacked two video clips on top of each other and my rendering window split with a smaller window to the left. I finished that project without being able to return my render screen to only one screen. I started a new project a day later and the split screen is still there. How do I get rid of the second render window and only have the one main render screen ?

That is the 360° Viewer for – surprise surprise – viewing 360° material. I guess you unknowingly hit the shortcut for it (⌥⌘7). Simply hit it again or ⌘0 (zero) to return to the standard layout.
