Hi all,
The project I have been working on for days and nearly finished is crashing fcpx. I have it on an external hard drive. (FCP opens when this not attached).

Error message says:The last time you opened Final Cut Pro, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?
It says I can click cancel, and may have to configure windows myself, but when when I click Ok to this is gives the error message below
Please help, (the simpler instructions, the better, as I'm a techno scratch head!)
Many thanks - I fear that I may have to start from scratch agin??? If so, can someone take me down the pub to drown the agony.

I'm in the same boat as simple answers. I use the same software and the odd times it crashes with a message saying do you want to report to Apple.
No doubt some member on this forum will help you.
To get you started.... Is your FCP-X software on your main hard drive? Do you have any other software open like iMovie or FCP7? Has any of your video files got a triangle open?? Is you project getting to big and running out of space??
In the past these are the items which have given me problems.
Also go on YouTube and look up FCP-X Crashing.
I hope this will help a little.

Thanks for the reply daybreak
Yes the software is on my main hard drive. I don't have any other editing software open and shut all other windows. FCPX opens with old videos on laptop, its only when I attach hard drive - it starts loading it and even momentarily (less than a second) looks to import clips into the event browser, although they look blued out as if empty, and then it crashes.
I have just checked out the memory and was surprised how little I had got left. I will transfer some off and see if that helps, and will report back tomorrow, thanks.

have you tried deleting the render files manually? (it should not hurt, but just to be sure, make a backup of your project, before you do that)

I have deleted everything apart from my video from my 1tb drive. It still gives the same error message. Aaargh!
Thanks Unami, I haven't deleted any render files - I guess now that I have released so much space that may now not be necessary, but I hadn't realised that this was an option, so thanks, I'll keep it in mind.
Any other ideas?

it's not about the space - the error could be caused by corrupt thumnail/peaks/render files

Ok, thanks Unami. I have phoned apple support who said it was a problem within the library on the external hard drive. I can't even get to the files on my project as it won't open, but i got rid of some from my laptop projects.
They suggested trying external hard drive on fcpx on another mac, which I am going to try. I don't feel too hopeful though

Try and keep the software on a drive free of any projects/events.

Check that first before moving forward.

If that runs then its def something in your assets.

Of note, external and non system drives used as work drives can cause issues if you have folders at top root copied from SD cards.
Makes the whole hard-drive act as a media drive.
I have this issue with Canon/GoPro files but ever with RED R3Ds.

Thanks everyone.

I have up to date fcp. I was on phone to apple support all morning and eventually he showed me how to go to previously backed up project within tcp.
At least I didn't lose a weeks editing, just one day!
Lesson learned - use time machine!

Not sure what caused it in first place tho. but its OK a day in now.

Any info as to what they did. Would they publish the case number and steps?

I think this would be a smart thing for Apple to do with situations such as yours.

Amanda, could you enlighten us on what he said beside using TimeMachine? Should other members have the same problem they can look it up.
Thank You.

The Time Machine part is a no brainer.
I don't use it but we use other options such as Dantz Retrospect.
At home I just copy my Event/Project files to a back up drive.

I would like to hear what Apple Tech did to get you going again.

Sounds like the tech guided Amanda on how to recover a corrupted file/library from a backed up version. It may just be a simple as deleting the current, then tell TM to recover one a few days old.
