I have an Air i7 with 8GB RAM from mid-2012.

It does not take much work in LR5 and Final Cut Pro X before the fan starts to run at full speed because of the CPU load. I am considering the new 13 "Retina later this year, but will just hear people's recommendations.

Although it is stronger, is it just pushing the CPU 100% as well so the fan also is going to spin? Or are the stronger machine a better match and therefore it will not need to work a 100% in for instance Lightroom editing?

I've purchased a 13 inch rmbp haswell and the fan speed never climbs over 3000 rpm when editing raw files in Lightroom, and that is only when exporting 50+ files to jpegs. Not sure how it compares to an MBA though as I've never owned one

Thanks.

Sounds like it's the way to go.
