Hi guys, here's a bedtime story for you digital kids.
I got an external battery for christmas, for recharging my iPod and mobile phone. I have been having trouble charging it using mains power USB adapters, so I try plugging it into my sleeping Macbook Pro's USB port...

...A red light illuminates on the external battery. Which means the external battery thinks it is charging another device, not being charged itself. Confused, I disconnect the external battery, and turn to wake the computer.

Nothing. The computer won't wake up. I press the power button, nothing. Checking the battery indicator lights reveals that they aren't working either. Even worse, the Magsafe charger light is off too. Starting to get worried now, I try holding down the power button, no response. Disconnect and reconnect the power supply, no response. Check the power supply still works by plugging it into my old MBP, it does. Panic proceeds to rise.

SMC reset, perhaps? Quick google to check the procedure, but still no response. Try again, and again, but still nothing. Try holding the keys down longer, but the computer is still completely dead.

Panic turns to terror.

As a final, last resort effort, I flip it over, unscrew the back, and pull off the connector cable to the inbuilt battery. After a few minutes, I put it back together, flip it back over, and nervously press the battery indicator button.

And on come the lights. Phew! Next up is the Magsafe adapter, which lights up to my relief as well. I push the power button, on comes the light, starting up noises happen, but then immediately turns off. But one more SMC reset, (this time the charging light flashes) and it starts up.

"Phew!" doesn't quite describe it.

So I guess the moral to this story is to be careful plugging USB things into your computer. I can only assume that the external battery started to push power into my computer, causing my computer's power controller to freak out, and a complete shut down of the power control and management systems. So much so it couldn't even recgnise that the MagSafe adapter was connected, preventing the SMC reset from working.

So I guess I won't be plugging my external battery into my computer again, lol!
