I have tried everything to update to a JB 5.0.1.. I've updated my host files in Windows and OS X, I'm in pwned DFU.. unchecked the "Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit" on Tiny Umbrella

Despite all of this I am still getting "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

I am using a custom IPSW that I created using redsn0w...

Help!!!

Apple is no longer signing 5.0.1 and you don't have shsh for it.
So you might as well stop trying... cuz it's impossible now.

I thought this just meant that I couldn't downgrade?

Is there no way I can upgrade either? Do I just have to wait until 5.1 is JB'd?

No since apple closed the window of 5.0.1 you can't upgrade to that unless you have previously been on that firmware and have saved SHSH.
However, you can update to 5.1 for a semi-untethered jailbreak for now while preserving your baseband.

Can I use someone else's SHSH? Or am I completely out of luck?

LOL. Why do so many people confuse this? SHSHs aren't strictly for going down some versions of firmware, it's just to actually go to that firmware and it's independent of what your current firmware version is. You can't use someone else's SHSHs 1. because each SHSH unique to the device (no s***, otherwise why would anyone need to save SHSHs if they can just use someone else's?) And 2. You can't use SHSHs to change firmware >=5.0 if Apple isn't currently signing it.

No sympathy.
