I know Apple executives read his work (and he does put out really detailed software reviews on his site MacStories) so hopefully they’ll see this. I disabled Stage Manager because I use Split View all the time and the two don’t work together.
But ever since he decided to switch his workflow to the Mac… he’s been hypocritical of the iPad.
Never said anything was wrong with that.Do you mean he finally realized that a Mac is superior for his workflow?
Nothing wrong with that. macOS is a far more capable operating system anyway.
My issue is ever since he’s switch it’s been a witch hunt on the iPad. When I listen to him on Connected podcast… he’s now heavily negative towards it.
The poor guy is probably damn frustrated and possibly regretting that he spent years tying himself in convoluted knots to find ways of doing things on the iPad when a Mac would have been the easier solution. On the plus side, it did pay his rent for a few years.Usually when there’s a discussion about the iPad he’s more balanced in his thoughts… but nowadays it’s been this constant thrash when the subject of the iPad is brought up.
And I happen to like SM on a Mac. Choice is good. And Federico still replaced a Mac with an iPad for a while.
As much as I respect him and his content, that was a terrible step back. There is nothing like macOS for productivity.
That said, I don't understand what the purpose of SM is on a Mac. There are countless tools which you can use to rearrange screens using just keyboard shortcuts. On an iPad it makes more sense, but not in its current state.
I agree. Android phones have better multitasking than iPadOS… part of the reason I choose Android over iOS for that very reason. It's definitely because iPadOS is severely hindering the potential of the hardware. Heck, even Android phones have better multitasking than iPadOS.
You bring this up as if I have a problem with him switching… I just acknowledged I don’t have a problem with that. I had a Mac… switched over to Windows, but I didn’t take the approach of criticizing the Mac... I wanted something different. And Windows was better suited for me.However, Federico (and anyone really) needed to step out of their iPad bubble and realize the grass was far greener on the other side. It's easy to accept flaws if that's the only thing you use - sunk cost fallacy is no joke.

My Fold 4 is on the way. And yeah, multitasking is amazing and that new task bar feature I'm interesting in trying out. I think that will replace users using the edge panel. But most compelling feature that gets overlooked is Sound Assistant which is having multiple audio sources playing simultaneously. I use that feature quite a bit.I saw some footage of multitasking on a Fold 4 and it looks amazing. Meanwhile I despise most forms of work on my iPhone because it's such a slow and clumsy process relative to macOS. The folding iPhone can't come soon enough.
Awesome. Have you decided yet if you want to keep recent windows (left side) and dock enabled? I kept going back and forth with the option and decided it’s much better leaving them off. I can easily hover to the left to show recent windows and down below to show the dock.I just picked up an M1 iPad 12.9” and jumped on the beta so I could try out Stage Manager and so far I’m loving it. I was a big lover of Slide Over but with SM I can have Safari, Messenger and Calendars all in the same workspace. And then I can add the Xfinity Stream app with PiP. Better than Split View or Slide over for me. And then another workspace is Mail, Notes and Reminders and PiP stays with me. I also a a Social Media one with FB and Twitter. I don’t use an external monitor (have a 27” iMac for that).
Bugs and glitches are to be expected that’s why I didn’t understand Federico frustration. When we are near release candidate firmware and bugs has not been addressed then there should be cause for concern. It does need some work as there are obviously bugs with switching workspaces or when you remove the SM Sidebar. But with the Magic Keyboard and what’s implemented it was an easy choice for the M1 iPad over a new M2 Air for me. A positive direction for iPadOS.
I’m leaving it off for now as like you said you can hover over the left side and I get more side-to-side space. I do have an issue where if you have an app flush with the left the most recent doesn’t display but I’m assuming it’s a bug so I’ve file a report. I’m hoping the next several betas will iron how some of the major issues. But I’ve been using it heavily since yesterday and no crashes for me.Awesome.
