And Federico still replaced a Mac with an iPad for a while.

As much as I respect him and his content, that was a terrible step back. There is nothing like macOS for productivity.

That said, I don't understand what the purpose of SM is on a Mac. There are countless tools which you can use to rearrange screens using just keyboard shortcuts. On an iPad it makes more sense, but not in its current state.

It’s a new thing and also it’s in beta. It will improve as time goes on.

Either that or Apple will just abandon it. They do this sometimes

Let me preface this by saying… I enjoy Federico thoughts and his expeditions on exploring new ways to do task with the iPad. I like his passion when it comes to discussing the iPad and how much he genuinely care about pushing the iPad to new heights. But ever since he decided to switch his workflow to the Mac… he’s been hypocritical of the iPad.

I totally understand that Stage Manager is buggy... I’ve been a day one user, I completely agree that it’s buggy. It has gradually improve throughout the beta cycle. These last couple betas has been better as far as responsiveness when it comes to resizing apps. Because early on in the beta cycle I had trouble resizing windows and some windows wouldn’t rotate properly.

But crashing every few minutes… now, that’s ridiculous. I can count on one hand daily where potentially I could get a crash using Stage Manager and I use it throughout the day. I no longer use Split View/Slide Over because I like Stage Manager. And his thoughts carries great weight.

I think his main issue stems from the fact there’s a particular way he wants Stage Manager to act and at this point it’s a whole new concept for Apple. I think Apple approach is to gradually improve Stage Manager… ironing out the bugs, make it solid to use for the public. And implementing new features isn’t high on their list right now, imo.

I do agree with him that if I have a group of windows on ”stage”… I should be able to transfer the group of windows from the iPad to an external display. Because it’s pointless trying to transfer individual windows to an external display. He mentions that there should be a “transfer stage to external display” option.

But Apple response is they have decided to not pursue it at this time. As of now, Apple is trying to fix bugs and glitches with the UI (resizing windows). However, since Apple has politely set his feature request on the shelf for the time being the result is to publicly criticize them.

I never even understood the „three dot“ thing they added on iPadOS 15 and didn’t care enough to bother to understand. Too much to learn to get the multi window thing down after using laptops for 25 years. I’ll stick with slide out from the right to glance at messages, twitter or emails while having safari open in full screen. Everything else with Stage Manager is too complicated (doesn’t fit my work flow / habits)

Good to have the option for those who like it of course!

Do you mean he finally realized that a Mac is superior for his workflow?

Nothing wrong with that. macOS is a far more capable operating system anyway.

Never said anything was wrong with that.

There’s no problem with him switching... If he felt that his workflow is better suited on the Mac, then that’s great. I don’t knock people for their preferences. My issue is ever since he’s switch it’s been a witch hunt on the iPad. When I listen to him on Connected podcast… he’s now heavily negative towards it.

Usually when there’s a discussion about the iPad he’s more balanced in his thoughts… but nowadays it’s been this constant thrash when the subject of the iPad is brought up.

It's definitely because iPadOS is severely hindering the potential of the hardware. Heck, even Android phones have better multitasking than iPadOS.

However, Federico (and anyone really) needed to step out of their iPad bubble and realize the grass was far greener on the other side. It's easy to accept flaws if that's the only thing you use - sunk cost fallacy is no joke.

The poor guy is probably damn frustrated and possibly regretting that he spent years tying himself in convoluted knots to find ways of doing things on the iPad when a Mac would have been the easier solution. On the plus side, it did pay his rent for a few years.

And I happen to like SM on a Mac. Choice is good.

I agree. Android phones have better multitasking than iPadOS… part of the reason I choose Android over iOS for that very reason.

But it’s ironic how Apple is addressing the criticism of iPadOS is hindering the hardware.. by announcing Stage Manager, Virtual Swap and More Space. But that’s not good enough. It seems that the only satisfaction people will have is stamping macOS on an iPad… which Apple has repeatedly stated they are two separate devices.

You bring this up as if I have a problem with him switching… I just acknowledged I don’t have a problem with that. I had a Mac… switched over to Windows, but I didn’t take the approach of criticizing the Mac... I wanted something different. And Windows was better suited for me.

I saw some footage of multitasking on a Fold 4 and it looks amazing. Meanwhile I despise most forms of work on my iPhone because it's such a slow and clumsy process relative to macOS. The folding iPhone can't come soon enough.

My Fold 4 is on the way. And yeah, multitasking is amazing and that new task bar feature I'm interesting in trying out. I think that will replace users using the edge panel. But most compelling feature that gets overlooked is Sound Assistant which is having multiple audio sources playing simultaneously. I use that feature quite a bit.

Multitasking really should be multi-windows because people truly can’t multitask.

I just picked up an M1 iPad 12.9” and jumped on the beta so I could try out Stage Manager and so far I’m loving it. I was a big lover of Slide Over but with SM I can have Safari, Messenger and Calendars all in the same workspace. And then I can add the Xfinity Stream app with PiP. Better than Split View or Slide over for me. And then another workspace is Mail, Notes and Reminders and PiP stays with me. I also a a Social Media one with FB and Twitter. I don’t use an external monitor (have a 27” iMac for that).

It does need some work as there are obviously bugs with switching workspaces or when you remove the SM Sidebar. But with the Magic Keyboard and what’s implemented it was an easy choice for the M1 iPad over a new M2 Air for me. A positive direction for iPadOS.

Awesome. Have you decided yet if you want to keep recent windows (left side) and dock enabled? I kept going back and forth with the option and decided it’s much better leaving them off. I can easily hover to the left to show recent windows and down below to show the dock.

Bugs and glitches are to be expected that’s why I didn’t understand Federico frustration. When we are near release candidate firmware and bugs has not been addressed then there should be cause for concern.

I’m leaving it off for now as like you said you can hover over the left side and I get more side-to-side space. I do have an issue where if you have an app flush with the left the most recent doesn’t display but I’m assuming it’s a bug so I’ve file a report. I’m hoping the next several betas will iron how some of the major issues. But I’ve been using it heavily since yesterday and no crashes for me.

But the M1 is definitely an improvement even if I opted not to use SM. Didn’t realize how much brighter and crisper the screen would be compared to my 2018.
