0817_POST-1_Mobile-Patents.jpg

This info graphic from Reuters is an updated version of one the Guardian built nearly a year ago.

In a single graphic, it shows how many companies are involved in litigation over mobile patents, and how they are all interconnected. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the lawsuit coverage on MacRumors recently, Apple is at the center of more lawsuits than any other company.

Lawsuits

How strange? Apple being sued? But how can this be? They never use anyone else's patents do they?? I thought the ipod was white because they are whiter than white?

You don't need to use other people's patents to get sued for patent infringement, you just need to use an "invention" covered by the patent. Many patents that have been awarded are ridiculously broad, then you just go to the Eastern District of Texas and the juries there will ok almost anything as infringing.

- That's where the $$$ is... go for it!!!

Too late. I already sued you and the previous poster for post infringement and you are already out of money.

Would be useful if the blue arrows somehow also indicated which side fired the first shot.

I'm not sure of whether apple's position in this is due to them having a disregard for others interlectual property or people are just going after Apple because as Ned Kelly said (when asked why he robed banks) 'that's where the money is.

No one really knows. Isn't Apple loosing to Kodak? I think that a lot of companies are going after Apple because they have changed the whole mobile industry. But who knows, that's just my theory.

i thought the Apple/Kodak case was resolved...

Reminds me of a subway map! Lots of routes going to/from the Apple terminal!

.

Actually a cross licence, though Nokia came out on top since they are getting cash too.

It was inevitable that Apple would be paying Nokia. The lawsuit was about how much. Hard to say who came out on top without looking at the before and after numbers.

Although, if the estimate of $600 million up front is correct, that's about $4 per iPhone sold before the settlement date. Less than 1% of the purchase price. Seems like we heard Nokia was asking for a lot more than that.

This is comical. The only thing that's scary about it is that tjis is for real. It's pure madness! Perhaps wars of the future will begin under the google or MS banner! WW4 brought to you by sanyo!
