few problems after fresh install of 10.6 (SL)

I have 2 problems after doing this fresh install.

My hard disk icon on my desktop is missing.

Spaces does not respond to mouse button presses (set currently to my fifth mouse button, expose is on my fourth, and is working, and yes, i tried switching them.)

HALP!

I'm not sure about Spaces, but you can show the hard drive under Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the Desktop -> (select) Hard disks.
