I currently have an iPhone 4 and use the Navigon GPS app quite extensively and it works fantastically in Canada. I often travel to the USA and to avoid abhorrent roaming charges I have to take the SIM card out, this however makes it impossible to use Navigon as it can't use cell towers to help pinpoint where I am.

With the 4G iPad, if I were to buy an AT&T Microsim but not activate it, could I use it to make Navgion work on my iPad? Or would I have to subscribe to at least the $14.99/month package for it to be able to use the cell towers as part of the GPS navigation?

If you turn off roaming, you won't get charged.

My iPad 1 with a Rogers sim works fine with navigon in US. Data is not available, because it's a prepaid plan.

I went to las Vegas last Christmas. Used navigon quite a lot. No data charges at all!
