Few questions regarding MBP ML and connecting to TV

I currently have OS X ML. I recently purchased a 10 ft hdmi, thinking I could connect it to a TV, have something playing (background noise) and still continue to work on my MBP.

Haven't used Windows for a while and I thought this was possible and I thought we were able to do this with SL also, after I switched to Lion I can't seem to figure this out.

Is this not possible ?

Do we need Apple TV for this ?
 
What is the problem? And what does Windows have to do with it?

Have you unchecked MIRROR DISPLAYS in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement?
