Hi,

I have an iPhone 3g 3.1.3 and am selling it to a friend but he wants it unlocked.

I am going to unlock it with PwnageTool 3.1.5, and am quite happy with following the instructions, however, there is one bit I do not get...

http://www.redmondpie.com/pwnagetool-3.1.5-jailbreak-iphone-3.1.3-3g-3gs/

Step 6: Click on "No" when PwnageTool asks you “Do you have an iPhone contract that would activate normally through iTunes?”:

I currently do have the original SIM card which works in the iPhone and is activated. Should I unlock the phone with the original activated SIM card in it or without the SIM card?

Thanks for any help.

I'd click yes. If you have a valid card. That option tells the software to hactivate your phone, which you only need to do if you aren't on a valid network with valid sim card.

so will the phone work without the valid SIM when I give it to my friend?

Thanks.

No, you cannot software unlock an iphone 3G or 3GS thats been updated to official 3.1.3
He can only use it with the official carrier that the phone is activated.
Pwnage doesnt unlock, it jailbreaks.
You can ask your operator for an official unlock so the phone could work with any carriers simcards.
