Field Test Mode iOS 4.3 IPH4

Can anybody explain to me in detail what some of the stuff means in the field test mode? I'm using umts primarily. I know iOS uses a moving average of about ten seconds to display the signal strength but sometimes I think it gets stuck and doesn't change at all until there is a drastic change in signal strength or the phone switches to a different band or tower. I think I figured out when it is switching towers/bands because of the change in cell id number and the downlink and uplink frequency numbers change too. Anybody out there an engineer or know more about field test mode and how it works? Thanks!
